Officials say police didn't recover 213,519 Bitcoin

A story has been doing the rounds this week about a Bulgarian police operation where hackers infiltrated the computer systems of the nation's customs officials to evade taxes.

Local law enforcement raided the ring and in a report in the domestic press quoted officials who said 213,519 Bitcoin were confiscated. At the time, those would have been worth around $426m but with the surging price of BTC, that's climbed to $3.5 billion, or more than 17% of Bulgaria's GDP.

According to Finance Magnates, officials are now saying that a total of 213,519 Bitcoin changed hands during the time when the group was executing the scheme. That is, if you believe them.

In 2015, a former Secret Service agent pled guilty to stealing more than $800,000 Bitcoin that had been recovered in the Silk Road case.
